Jeff
We have known each other for over a decade now. Our friendship grew as we shared the same interest and that is trading using technical analysis. Congratulations on your blog website. Very informative
on the specific products and trading patterns. Hope all this translates into more $$$$$ for traders.
Kish

Jeff,
Keep you big stick away from me!
First Blog I ever responded too….Come to think of it, first Blog I ever took the time to look at… I still have not found the internet age … still prefer smoke signals but getting harder and harder to get replies…
Hmmm… ” a man of all seasons” ..I like that.
I guess I would have to write those famous Buffet lines…
“I am just a pirate, born two hundred years too late
The cannons dont thunder, there’s nothing to plunder,
I’m an over 40 victim of fate, arriving to late”
PS…that’s JIMMY BUFFET … not Warren for all you trader people out there…Ah Yo
Hi Lonnie,
I prefer Ronin to Pirate

Hello Jeff,
All words of wisdom. I myself have traded the stock and options markets for 30 years or so now, and traded commodities for 4 years (not successfully alas – although one day I will come back to it). I find it interesting that you too play guitar, and also chess – the former a current passion of mine, the latter more in the past but always lurking in the background.
I’ll put out one thought on trading (well maybe two or three thoughts). Day-trading has to be the hardest thing to be successful at. You have to overcome transaction costs, and the risk of some large block trade kicking on your rear-end at any moment. I played with it a little bit in commodities and just couldn’t make any money at it. Therefore, if I trade, it is position trading.
Money management is of course the key, and the safest and most successful way I’ve traded in the past is using Jesse Livermore’s simple method of averaging up. (I highly recommend the book based on his life – Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, by Edwin Lefevre.)
The advantage of position trading is that you give your trade time to make money – for the big money you need patience. By starting with only a portion of your intended capital for the position, say 40%, you can give it a wider stop-loss and observe the initial behaviour of the position without taking on too much risk.
Then you increase your position only after it shows a profit and is continuing to show indications of strength. You can use technical indicators, but even a “dumb” 10% higher and 10% higher again to make subsequent purchases also works quite well. I usually trade 40%, 30%, and 30% to establish the full position.
There is a strong psychological advantage in doing this. You already are in the money when adding to the position, and trading from a position of strength and success – not weakness and doubt. And of course you can better protect your capital, typically with trailing stops. You NEVER average down if you are trading (although it can be OK if you are a long-term value investor).
In the past couple of years I’ve been using more of an investment/allocation strategy, althouhg more recently I’m taking a position trading tack around energy, short ETFs, and inflation. I cover this in great detail in my own blog at http://stockadventures.wordpress.com/.
I’d love to have you visit and hear your comments.
Cheers,
George (a.k.a Allocator)
Hi Jeff,
Good to meet up with you and the gang in Singaport again.
Just thought I’d congratulate you on your site – it’s very informative and interesting. Hope you have time to maintain it now you’re busy….
The markets that I’m watching at the moment are soybeans, sugar, and crude.
Sugar is intersting but I’m feeling less confident about the uptrend resuming soon as we have a break (but not yet acceptance) below 12m PSZ on the monthly chart). I would have like to see the PSZ hold which would have increased support for MIDAS. Still we have MIDAS support coming in at 9.67 with the last valid 12m MIDAS support at 8.93. i guess if we get acceptance below PSZ at 10.17 then we’ll be heading down to PBZ.
Lets catch up soon.
Loraine
Hi Allocator,
Thank you for your kind words of encouragement. I have recently been engaged as a full time educator for CMC Markets in the Singapore office, so I have little time to devote to my own blog.
Hi Lorraine, Yes, lets catch up when you come over to Singapore, or when I go to Melb next Easter for the Shinkendo seminar
Hi Jeff, I would like to explore commodity trading. Can I know which trading company are you using for making your transactions?
Is there a dummy guide for Commodity Trading?
Thanks,
JN – Singapore
